Welcome!

We offer a warm welcome to visitors to Memorial Presbyterian Church. What follows is a mini-guide to our church - its ministries, people, and programs. We can't possibly tell you all about Memorial Presbyterian Church in a few words, so we invite you to come and share Worship services, fellowship times, and other activities offered so you have an opportunity to learn more about us. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! Or call the church office, 835-6759, for more information.

There are many wonderful, exciting things happening in the life of our church, and we invite you to become a part of our family! You are always welcome!

Becoming a Member of Memorial Presbyterian Church

Membership in the church is a statement about a person's values and commitment to Christ. Individuals are received into membership in the following ways:

  • Profession of Faith - for persons who have not been baptized or professed their faith in Jesus Christ and who now wish to profess their faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Certificate of Transfer - for persons who have made a profession of faith and are members in good standing in another Christian church which will send a Certificate of Transfer.
  • Reaffirmation of Faith -- for baptized persons who have previously made a profession of faith and were active members in a church but are unable to secure a Certificate of Transfer.

Classes for adults considering membership are held several times each year and are led by our clergy with assistance from lay persons. These classes offer adults the opportunity to consider their commitment to Christ and the church. They help persons explore the basic faith of Christians, Presbyterian history and government, worship, and the commitment of membership. Click here for a list of class dates for 2008. Missions We Support

The Board of Deacons actively engages members for hands-on mission outreach. Included are lunch preparations for the children of Operation Fun (summer day camp in Mills Township), emergency food through the H.E.L.P. food pantry, holiday gifts for those in need through the Sharing Tree, house construction through Habitat for Humanity, and help with meals as needed by those who are ill. Members of Memorial also volunteer at a soup kitchen in Saginaw.

A Personal Assistance program is operated to help those in need throughout Midland County. Mission dollars from the annual operating budget are distributed locally, nationally, and internationally.

Memorial Church maintains personal interests with churches in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Communications

The weekly newsletter is printed in the guide for worship on Sunday mornings.

Members also receive a monthly newsletter that contains articles, calendars, and other information about the activities of the church for the next month.

Child Care

Childcare is available during worship services, choir rehearsals, and for many other events upon request.

Communion is generally celebrated the first Sunday of each month, and all who have been baptized are invited to partake, including, children who are being nurtured and instructed in the significance of the Sacrament.

Children, teens, and adults are encouraged to attend the Church School and Education Hour classes.

Youth fellowships for grades 4 -12 meet Sunday afternoons and evenings.

Baptism

Baptism is one of the two Sacraments (the other is Communion) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and is defined as "the Word made visible." It is an act of forgiveness, a cleansing, and a renewal of faith vows for all believers taking part in the worshiping community. In infant Baptism, parents present their child, taking their vows before God and the assembled congregation, promising to raise the child in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord." In the Presbyterian Church, we believe that the congregation plays a significant role in the nurturing of the baptized child. To arrange for Baptism, please contact the church office, 835-6759.

Our Church Government

Memorial Presbyterian Church is governed by the constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

The Session is the ruling body of the local church. All other boards, committees, missions, and programs function under the Session's consent and supervision. Members of Session are ordained elders.

The Board of Deacons is responsible for ministering to those in need, the sick, the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. The Deacons administer a significant portion of the church budget for outreach programs.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the administration and use of the funds and properties of Memorial Church, including the maintenance of the facilities.

Session members, Deacons, and Trustees are elected for terms of three years with a limit of two consecutive terms.
