Trustee: the Office of
Trustee is one of dignity and responsibility, requiring ability and devotion."
The Book of Order
The Board of Trustees holds and administers; on behalf of
the church, and subject to its will as expressed by the congregation or the Session, all
church property, trust funds, and endowments. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the
operation and maintenance of the church property.
The work of The Board of Trustees is carried out primarily through the following
Committees:
| Publicity &
Communications |
Financial Operations |
| Property |
|
PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATION
A. THE COMMITTEES OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES:
-
The Financial
Operations Committee
- The Property Committee
- The Publicity and Communication Committee
B. THE MEMBERSHIP OF COMMITTEES:
There should be a rotation system on each committee of the
Board of Trustees.
-
Each committee, except for the Publicity and Communications Committee will consist of three classes. (e.g. '98, '99, '00)
-
All persons should ordinarily serve on only one permanent
committee of the Board of Trustees.
-
Trustee's Input: Each trustee should receive a copy of
the Trustee's Manual, and after reading it carefully should indicate the order of
preference for service on the committees of the Trustees. A master list of preferences of
Trustees should be prepared.
-
Selection of Committee Chairs: Each year the President of
the Board of Trustees will nominate (to the Board of Trustees) a trustee to be the
chairperson of each committee of the Trustees, having first secured from the individual an
indication of her/his willingness to serve in that capacity. The chairpersons subsequently
are elected by the Board of Trustees giving full consideration to those persons nominated
by the President. A committee chairperson should serve as chair of a committee for a term
of one year and is eligible for one additional term if elected.
-
Trustee Assignments: The chairpersons of committees
should then meet with the President of the Board and the staff resource persons for the
Trustees, to review the master list of preferences of all trustees, and prepare a list of
Trustee committee assignments for recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
C. THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
So that the Board of Trustees might have continuity in its
organization and duties after the election of new trustees at the Annual Meeting of the
Corporation, new officers for the Board of Trustees should be elected in the following
manner:
-
Trustees who are retiring from the board at the next
Annual Meeting of the Corporation shall meet as a nominating committee prior to the
regular December meeting of the Board of Trustees to select nominees for president,
vice-president, and secretary of the board. This ad hoc committee shall ascertain the
willingness of those persons to serve in the capacities for which they have been selected.
The president of the Board of Trustees, if retiring from the board, shall serve as chair
of this committee. Otherwise, the president shall appoint a chair.
-
At the December meeting of the Board of Trustees, the
nominating committee shall present its nominee for each office for election. Other persons
may be nominated by the Board of Trustees. A president, vice-president, and secretary
shall be elected from those persons nominated.
-
The officers
elected at the December meeting shall serve as president-elect, vice
president-elect, and secretary-elect until new trustees are elected at the
Annual Meeting of the Corporation. Subsequent to the Annual Meeting of the
Corporation.
